Welcome to Respectful Online Affirming Relationships (ROAR)! We believe everyone should be able to make meaningful connections in a safe and inclusive environment. For additional information not found on the site, please contact Maddison Yule (maddie.yule@pressbc.com).

ROAR was created to help 18+ CLBC clients with developmental disabilities build relationships and here are five reasons why:

  1. Inclusivity: ROAR can help promote inclusivity by providing a platform for people with developmental disabilities and/or on the more challenged end of the autism spectrum to meet and connect with others who understand their unique experiences and challenges.
  1. Accessibility: Many other apps or sites may not be designed with accessibility in mind, which can make it difficult for people who are cognitively diverse to use them. Through ROAR, users will be assured that the website is accessible and user-friendly for everyone.
  1. Increased confidence and self-esteem: People who are cognitively diverse often face societal stigma and discrimination, which can lead to feelings of low self-esteem and confidence. ROAR can provide a safe and supportive environment where users can feel confident and empowered to connect with others.
  1. Improved social skills: People with developmental disabilities and/or on the more challenged end of the autism spectrum may face difficulties in developing social skills and making connections with others. ROAR can provide a low-pressure environment where users can practice their social skills and build meaningful connections based on what’s important to them
  1. Breaking down stereotypes: By providing a platform for people who are cognitively diverse to connect with others, ROAR is helping break down stereotypes and prejudices surrounding disabilities. This can lead to increased understanding and acceptance of people who are cognitively diverse in society as a whole.
